Who makes their own bread?

Post by Eugen »

We're baking our own sourdough bread for a few years now. This here just came out of the oven

I can share our recipe and how to if people are interested. Can share out sourdough starter too of course. I got starter from :usa:, apparently original from the Oregon trail.

I never baked bread, I do biscuits. Use to have one of those bread making machines years ago. Made excellent bread and many varieties. But put a lot of pounds on. Hehe.

Living in Atlanta during my early 20's, bread making was a biweekly occurrence. The go to recipe was a potato bread using 15 lbs of flour and yielded enough to feed four adults for 2 weeks. If we ran out of fresh bread the moaning and belly-aching was louder and longer than a hungry babies cries. It has been 40 years since bread making was a routine.

Several months ago our fridge failed and left us with a quart of soured milk. Not wanting to toss it out, a quick internet search turned up a wonderful sour milk bread recipe. A couple of weeks ago M bought a quart of cream that curdled when added to coffee. The store refunded her money and said dump it. Taking their advice, the curdling quart of cream was dumped into a bowl along with 8 cups of flour, yeast, and a bit of oil.

An hour of rise time in the mixing bowl and and hour in the pans and 30 minutes in the oven

produced 3 loaves of bread and 1 pan of cinnamon rolls.

Our problem now is we have guest from Sunday afternoon to Wednesday. If you think controlling an urge to open Christmas gifts early is hard, waiting until tomorrow to tear into the rolls is 10 fold worse. Yes we did give in an ate a 4, thus a missing row in the pan.

At the oldest daughter's request, we had sausage bread with poached eggs for brunch.

I call that a real Christmas breakfast! :D Tim, I never heard of sausage bread. Is it specific to some nation or customs?

Guys, we had a couple of bread machines over the years. They sure are handy. But once I switched to sourdough and slow proofing, I could never go back. We no longer buy bread, just make it twice a week. It's also not a lot of work, mix the ingredients in the morning, stretch it at 5-6pm and bake it around 9-10.

Just something we came across years ago.
