Fixing up Grandpa... aka Case 195

Starting to do some tweaks and minor repairs to our "Senior" tractor before he goes up north for summer vacation

And it was a nice day for working outside in the BigSky fab shop -

today's adventure was fixing the wear in the front hanger brackets for the mower deck.

Removed the "fangs" from the frame so I could reinforce/build up the slots for the mounting pins.

Found some nice heavy hardened 1/2" washers that do the trick nicely, Cut slots in washers to match slots in the fangs and then weld it all into place...

You could see how much the original holes have hogged out in the last 55 years...
Also found the carriage bolts holding the hanger brackets had been over torqued in the past and threads are stretched. Something else to replace before it goes back together...

welded everything up, and built up the gaps on the backside so everything was solid

Checking the fit with a 1/2" bolt - all snug now, with no excessive gaps
(We'll see how it works when it's time to put the hangers back on the machine )...

Just waiting on the paint to dry now before I put it back together and see how much this one little fix helps stabilize the mower deck

@propane1 - Noel - "Summer be over..." You are so close to the truth

We have only made 2 "day trips" to the property so far this year. Five hour drive there, six hours of work, and then another five hour drive home... It's almost like the old days when I would do long haul calls in my service truck.

We were there last Saturday and you could tell I hadn't done any clean up this spring, the wild blackberry bushes are almost waist high again ,

I could barely see where I had left the backhoe last fall.

Going up there next week to stay for a few days, probably leave at home, She doesn't like the sound / smell of the weedwacker when it's going for hours and hours,

Deer flies were like piranhas last Saturday, we spent the entire time wearing our bug jackets, -

Long way away. For sure. I could drive from home to West Point, then turn around and go to east point and back home again, here on the island, with in 5 to 6 hours. That would do me in.
Jumpins, those deer flies must be nasty.

Dang we get black flies down here, which im allergic too, but they only stick around for 3 or 4 weeks in spring. I don’t think I want any part of deer flies!

Nice repairs, grandpa should be ready to go to work pretty quick!

@JSinMO - yes, it's biting fly season in Ontario (that time of year between snow melting in spring and and the first heavy autumn frost )

Deer flies are particularly nasty, they love to swarm around your head and aren't distracted by flailing arms trying to shoo them off. You hear them, then feel them land, and immediately start biting chunks of exposed flesh so they can lap up the blood from the gaping wound... - not like a mosquito bite when you don't know you've been bit until the itch starts afterwards...

They didn't seem as bad last year, but early in the spring I had chopped down all the weeds and brush in the clearing where we are going to build our house... the weeds and wild blackberry bushes is next on my list of things to do up there

Looking forward to your adventures there Gerry! Good fix on the senior citizen Little by little issues get resolved and then you have a really nice and functional tractor, with a character to boot.

I like the look of the big Case backhoe there!

Deer flies... yep, we got them too, but doesn't seem extremely bad here. Just the odd one joining us along for walks. Seems easy for me to slap them into oblivion once they land on my baldy.

Nice fix Gerry! I need to address the various places with play on the K45 deck on my 444. Different mounting style but I'll apply your washer trick for some spots.

Looking forward to more pics of your adventures on your new plot of land. I agree with Eugen, like the look of the Case backhoe. You'll soon have things in shape with your machines.

I can remember trimming around Nipissing University campus in North Bay for a summer job in between my last year there. The blackflies carried me away and left a bloody ring around my neck where the bug suit had a gap between the hood and jacket...made sure it was zipped up after that! You'll see a big improvement once you open things up with the overgrowth.
