descaler
I picked up one these on sale a little bit ago
. Low power high hits per second . Tryed it out today on cleaning up winter wheels . You know those black steel wheels that are covered in rust after the first year. I did not think of taking a before pic. But here is a pic . after the needle descaler and Krud Killer Rust converter
And one after some paint .
If I had spent some time with sand paper smoothing off the lumpy bumps , it would have looked better . But at the end of the day it is all left over paint , no more rust and will lok great with a coat of road salt on them .Dave

Re: descaler
Great job on that rim Dave. I had to look at it and hide so my wife doesn't see what you did or else she'll get ideas and want our wheels like that too!

Re: descaler
Agreed @Eugen The mood M is in, she would ask me once, chip at me twice, then go out and start chipping at the wheels by herself. @DavidBarkey I don't mean to chip at you but you have started something can't easily be painted over. M might just keep chipping at getting other things started on her bucket list.

Re: descaler
Those needle descalers are a great thing. I got one to use on the trailer a few years ago. Did the wheels too. They do a great job and faster than trying to scrape the loose rust off.

Great job on the rims David. I know what you mean about road salt. Here in NY they really apply it heavily. Harry

Re: descaler
I had never used one before . I can tell you that there is a lot less fine dust than when you use a grinder .So great in the shop. But you need a lot of air to run it for any length of time . Now it doe not take all the rust of , but the flaky paint and rust down to the metal . It will make it easier to clean up with wire wheel , sand paper or sand blaster .

Re: descaler
As a welder for years I have used various descaling and chipping guns to remove rust and flux from welds. Don’t forget to use your hearing protection or you’ll end up like me. Huh, what did you say. Drives the up the wall. I just give her a dumb look. Harry

Re: descaler
We used those a lot in the heavy equipment shop - working on big wheel loaders and haul trucks that came from local steel mills and quarries... rock dust and slag would get like concrete. Air chisels and needle descalers were the fastest way to find components hiding under the crap.
So... Hearing protection is a must - don't want to be accused by of having "acute selective hearing" safety glasses and a dust mask or respirator are a good idea too...
Be cautious using them near machined or very smooth sealing surfaces though - held at the right angle they give the metal underneath a nice textured surface (not so good for final drive seals... )

Re: descaler
I always tell not to talk to me unless were in the same room, but she won’t listen. So I guess she has selective hearing herself. If someone else is around she whispers. Then I tell her to stop whispering. Then she gets mad.DavidBarkey wrote: ↑Thu Nov 09, 2023 6:59 amAfter 30 years in automotive , I am all ready there .
